Seed House owner, Lauren Kosinski, has practiced medicine for over 30 years, beginning as a general surgeon and refining her practice to colon and rectal surgery with special training in complex rectal cancer management, sphincter preserving therapy, and minimally invasive surgical techniques. Although she remains enthralled with the power of medical care to improve lives, she is also disillusioned with the Western medical paradigm. Throughout her career, she found that frequently the culture of “care” was flawed – seeing and treating patients as diseases rather than individuals, relegating female patients and nurses to subordinate roles in an unhealthy power struggles, and focusing on the financial aspect of compensation for care, rather than the wellness of the client. These systemic issues adversely affect both the patient and the provider. Lauren envisions a practice space that nourishes compassion and builds resource for physicians and other health care workers, as well as those seeking care. The Seed House is developing with this goal and has already become a hub for wellness activities in Chestertown and is helping to make Chestertown a destination for renewal as well as providing for our community.
